[D-6] AUG 6 – LET’S MEET THE WORLD: Tonga

Tong is a sovereign state located in the South Pacific Ocean. It is an archipelago comprising 176 islands. Among the islands, only 52 of the islands are inhabited. The country is well known as the friendly Islands because of the friendly reception accorded to Captain James Cook who had first visited the island in 1773. In addition, Tonga is the only islands nation in the region to have avoided formal colonization. Generally, the weather is wet and dry with the tropical climate. Tongan speaks English and Tongan and is heavily influenced by Polynesian tradition such as a Christian faith. The Capital is Nukualofa located on the north coast of the islands of Tongatapu.

Lakalaka

-is a Tongan group dance where the performers are largely standing still and make gestures with their arms only.

 

Tau Olunga

-is a traditional Tongan solo dance for virgins, representing the honor and innocent of young virgins. The dance is similar to Hawaiian hula.
