Colombia, officially the Republic of Colombia is located in northwestern South America. This country shares border with Panama to the northwest, Venezuela and Brazil to the north and Ecuador and Peru to the south. It meets Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean. Its economy is the fourth largest in Latin America and the country is famous for the production of coffee, flowers, emeralds, coal, and oil. Its climate strikingly varies depending on not seasons but differences in elevation, ranging from very hot at sea level to relatively cold at higher elevations. The hydrography of Colombia is one of the richest in the world. However, this country also faces environmental challenges caused by both natural and human factors. The country has 15 major volcanoes and one of them, Armero in 1985, resulted in substantial loss of life. Columbia is also dealing with deforestation, soil and water quality damage from overuse of pesticides, etc.
Columbia host National Day at Yeosu Expo today (July 8)! To celebrate Columbian National Day, the world’s most colorful carnival, the Barranquilla Carnival whose history trace back to 19th century came to Yeosu and attracted visitors!! The Barranquilla Carnival was declared as one of the World Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2003. This carnival is considered as a shining example of unite of 3 different cultures – European, African, and aboriginal.
